First up is The Whitney, named after Whitney Dafoe. He has become the reluctant poster boy for raising awareness about the disease called ME/CFS. Myalgic Encephalomyelitis, or Chronic Fatigue Syndrome as it is often called, is a devastating multi-system disease. Globally around 20-million people have, making it more common than HIV, Parkinson’s or multiple sclerosis. Yet because of negligence, ignorance and stupidity, it has been stigmatised in the medical world and therefore not received sufficient attention or funding to date, and many sufferers are stuck in a terrible no-mans-land. A frightening recent twist to the tale is that a significant percentage of people who contract even a mild case of Covid-19 are going on to suffer long-covid, which looks very much like ME/CFS.
