From ME Support In Glamorgan.
Dr Nina Muirhead is a dermatologic surgeon at the NHS who is married and has two children. Anyone hearing this information may think that everything is going well with her. In fact, she has been suffering from a disease called Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME), commonly known as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS), for two and a half years. “My life has completely changed after ME,” she said.
She began to show symptoms of ME in September 2016 after being infected with a virus. “ME is a horrendous disease that causes a lot of pain and distress, as well as light and noise hypersensitivity,” she said.
Before ME, Dr Muirhead was fit and active. She used to go cycling and run 10km on a regular basis, and fully enjoyed her social life. After manifesting the disease, her life changed completely. “When I had ME, I could not do anything at all. I could no longer read, watch TV, or even answer e-mails,” she said. Although she slowly began to get better after a while, she was in a wheelchair when she went out.
