When my wife Madeleine died, in 1987, I suddenly felt very alone. It’s heartbreaking to lose someone you love. It was an awful time.
I kept myself busy with work for years but I didn’t know what to do with myself when I retired. I have children and I like to see them, but they wouldn’t want me round their house every day of the week. I started to feel lost.
But then 12 years ago, I joined Men in Sheds (an Age UK initiative to bring men together to learn new skills such as woodworking). It’s brilliant and it gives me something to look forward to.
