Millions of people risk being “trapped” in their own homes because they are left without wheelchairs as they recover from illness, the British Red Cross has warned. The charity found that while most people needing a wheelchair for more than six months had been offered one, more than four million people who would benefit from the short-term use of a wheelchair or mobility aid had gone without. 114 of 139 NHS wheelchair services across the UK said they could not provide wheelchairs for short-term use.
The Red Cross said a lack of information about services, stigma around wheelchair use and a “postcode lottery” are among the reasons people are not getting the right support.
