What Exactly Is Myalgic Encephalomyelitis?

Although there are good diagnostic criteria for myalgic encephalomyelitis, knowledge of the disease is often lacking and this can result in misdiagnosis and incorrect treatment. There is a need for more research, greater expertise among clinicians, and refinement of the diagnostic criteria.

In the literature and in clinical practice, chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) and myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME) are sometimes used synonymously. Limited knowledge of aetiology and pathology has resulted in a variety of terms being used to refer to various long-term pain and fatigue disorders of unknown origin. Research over recent years, the establishment of good diagnostic criteria, and clinical experience, however, indicate that myalgic encephalomyelitis is a reasonably well-defined disorder with distinct clinical characteristics.
