Disability Access To York City Centre

City of York Council and Access Discrimination.

You may recall from a previou post that I mentioned how City of York Council had barred Blue Badge Holders from the city centre. This temporary situation supposedly brought in due to Covid-19 restrictions is now to be made permanent.

A debate on the subject of access was held by the council last night. Unbelievably, two disabled councillors were banned from the debate as they were seen to have a conflict of interests ! Only after special dispensation was given were they able to join in after a break in proceedings. This dispensation applies to last night’s meeting only.

Rarther than being seen as people with a special insight on the subject in question, they were seen as having a conflict of interests !

Would councillors with children be barred from a debate on youth activities in the city ? Would black councillors be banned from a debate on race ?

This council are working toward a car free city, with no care about the laws on discrimination or helping those who need their car to be close to facilities in the city centre. They should be ashamed of their actions. They seem to forget that social media doesn’t stop at the edge of York, and many disabilty groups will be letting their members know that they are not welcome here. York is supposedly working towards being a Human Rights City. This would be comical if it wasn’t so seriously discriminatory and shameful.
